I’ve been talking to a lot of fellow knitters since starting my own journey - it’s been one of my favourite parts - meeting this fabulous community and sharing stories, projects, advice, support....and a little bit of my own rookie-knitter neurosis! The first thing I always find myself asking people is WHAT ARE YOU MAKING?! And one response keeps coming back to me, time and time again, - no matter how long people have been knitting, their skill, or confidence, level - I keep hearing the same thing; “I mainly knit for other people. I hardly knit for myself.” When asked why this is, the main reasons I'm told are:
Firstly, let’s put to bed this entire idea of the 'SELFISH KNIT'. Spending your hard-earned spare time and resources on crafting yourself a beautiful handmade garment that you will get to wear and enjoy is not selfish. After all, you’re the one spending days or weeks meticulously, patiently, making the item by hand, stitch by stitch - it’s perfectly fair and reasonable that you should get something from it at the end! Knitting is a leisure pursuit, not a day job where you work hard, only for Big Boss to reap the benefits! You're not alone in this idea. I hear the phrase 'SELFISH SEWING' all the time in the online sewing community, so knitters definitely aren’t unique in these feelings. So how about we all, once and for all, banish the word selfish from our handmade vocabulary. The word Selfish in regards to our knitting is so done. Over. Gone. Forever! As for reasons one and two, these are words that I hear a lot from my clients in my role as a personal stylist at my consultancy, New Boots & Panties. These fears and insecurities come out constantly when I’m holding consultations and style mentoring sessions with my clients, as well as in the comment section on social media. Trust me, I get it - these feelings of indecision and lack of style confidence are so loud and overwhelming that it often feels safer and easier to not bother thinking about ourselves and our bodies. And that’s absolutely fine, if that’s what you want - I’m the biggest advocate that we must all follow what makes us feel good when it comes to clothing and style. But so often it isn’t what we want, or how we wish to feel. Which is where Never Been Knit is here to help... Over the coming weeks I’ll be posting a series dedicated to the idea of building, maintaining and most of all, LOVING, your knitted wardrobe. In it we’ll touch on why, how, what and look at commonly held questions and concerns around fit, plus-size patterns, maintenance and styling - so that you’ll be in a place to dive head-first into, and enjoy your own handmade, knitted wardrobe.
